The NesteMY SAF was used for the return flight of an Airbus A321, making Vietnam Airlines the first airline in its home country to deploy SAF for commercial passenger flights, the Finnish refiner and renewable fuels manufacturer said on Tuesday.
The aircraft was refuelled at the Changi Airport in Singapore and travelled to Hanoi, Vietnam, on May 27. The SAF was made from renewable waste and residue raw materials at Neste’s refinery at Changi Airport and then blended with conventional jet fuel.
"We are collaborating with our partners in the supply chain to expand the use of SAF in the future, thereby contributing to the successful achievement of goals related to net-zero emissions and climate change prevention," said Nguyen Chien Thang, executive vice president of Vietnam Airlines.
Earlier this month, Singapore Airlines ordered 1,000 tonnes of SAF from Neste’s Changi refinery for use by its SIA and Scoot air carriers.
